Ons Huisie – The Coastal Restaurant Where Tradition Meets Delight
Tucked away in the sunny suburb of Bloubergstrand, Ons Huisie is more than just a coastal treasure – it boasts a rich history and an array of delicious dishes as well. Join me in this review as we explore what this cosy restaurant has to offer. This is the start of my culinary review series, where I’ll be checking out both local legends and some hidden gems around Cape Town and beyond. So, let’s take a look at what Ons Huisie brings to the table!
Upon entering, I was immediately charmed by the Cape Dutch-style building and the lively ambience that filled the spacious patio. Our waiter, Zazu, seated us in a tranquil indoor area adorned with vintage photographs of Bloubergstrand, setting a nostalgic tone for our meal. The clean, white decor added an elegant touch to the cosy setting.

As we perused the menu at Ons Huisie, we noted the array of traditional South African and Afrikaans-style dishes, but it was the West Coast mussel pot that truly intrigued us. Presented with a choice of two sauces—white wine sauce or smoky tomato sauce —we couldn’t resist trying both. Our waitress suggested a shared serving, accompanied by their in-house bread selection, including homemade ‘Roosterkoek’, ‘Blik Brood’, and cornbread. This appetising assortment served as the perfect precursor to our main course, enhancing the anticipation for what was to come.
The moment we tasted the West Coast mussel pot, we were captivated by the succulent mussels enveloped in the rich, smoky tomato sauce. Each mussel was tender and juicy, offering a delightful burst of flavour. The velvety white wine sauce provided a delightful contrast, adding a touch of sophistication to the dish. We found ourselves torn between the two sauces, unable to pick a favourite.
As we progressed to dessert, the deep-fried milk tart pancakes stole the show. Though small in size, they packed a flavourful punch. Crispy on the outside and creamy with a hint of tartness inside, each bite was a delightful blend of textures and tastes that lingered on our palates. This was an iteration of the dish that I hadn’t seen before. I never would have imagined pairing “deep fried” and “milk tart” in the same sentence, but it works.
During my conversation with the staff, I discovered that Ons Huisie’s building dates back to the 1700s, boasting original foundations that have withstood the test of time. This revelation transformed my perception of the restaurant into more than just a dining establishment—it became a living heritage site, preserving a piece of history unlike any other in the area. With its rich cultural significance and historical charm, Ons Huisie stands as a true gem, offering not just a meal, but a journey through time.

The exceptional service, attentive staff, and nostalgic ambience added to the overall dining experience at Ons Huisie. From start to finish, the food surpassed our expectations, offering exceptional flavours that satisfied our cravings for hearty warmth. With an inclusive menu catering to various dietary requirements, Ons Huisie ensures a satisfying dining experience for all patrons.
In conclusion, Ons Huisie isn’t just a restaurant – it’s an experience that celebrates history and flavour. From the charming ambience to the exceptional flavours, every aspect of my visit was memorable. As I continue my culinary review series, I look forward to uncovering more hidden gems to pique your interest.
