Breaking the Beat Ceiling: Women Reclaiming the Rhythm in Electronic Music

The Birth of a Movement: Mixed Methods Takes the Stage

The conversation about gender disparity in electronic music is often subdued, hidden beneath layers of basslines and beats. However, there’s a new voice echoing among our ears. The Mixed Methods Podcast, founded by hosts, Michaela Crowe and Tanya Dreyer, brings this conversation front and centre. Their mission is about amplifying the voices of women who have been pushing boundaries and demanding their space in this male-dominated industry.

As we all know, the electronic music scene has long been dominated by male DJs and producers, which means the emergence of platforms like Mixed Methods is not just timely but necessary. This podcast isn’t just about spinning records—it’s about spinning the narrative.

The journey of Mixed Methods began with a simple yet powerful question: Why? Why is the progression of women in electronic music so slow? Why are sound engineering courses still flooded with men while women remain on the sidelines?

These questions sparked fires and led to action after years of observing and questioning the status quo. And so, Mixed Methods came to be—not just as a podcast, but as a movement. A call to action for inclusivity, sustainability, and equality in electronic music.

As we all know, the electronic music scene has long been dominated by male DJs and producers, which means the emergence of platforms like Mixed Methods is not just timely but necessary.

Women’s Day Debut: Celebrating Fierce Females

The first episode aired on Women’s Day, which was a fitting tribute to the powerful women who have been quietly but persistently making their mark in electronic music. Featuring some of my favourite names like Gabzilla, Dakota, TarrynTino, and Magz, the episode was a celebration of resilience, passion, and the spirit of women in the industry. These women shared their stories of navigating a scene where they are often outnumbered and underestimated, of finding inspiration in unlikely places, and of building their careers against the odds.

The ladies emphasise the importance of education, networking, and self-belief. They also touch on body positivity in an industry that often places more value on appearance than talent, all while battling the trials and tribulations of mental health – something we all struggle with as humans.

“This whole idea of saying female DJ bugs me. I’m not a female DJ – I’m a DJ. Do you say ‘male DJ’? No, you don’t. I’m a professional, so you can call me what I am.” – Dakota

The episode highlights the hard work and perseverance it takes to earn a place in a world where women are often seen as novelties rather than equals. As well as how important it is to have support from men within the scene.

“We still need to be respected and shown the appreciation that we have pushed to get to this point, it wasn’t just handed to us – we didn’t suck dick to get here.” – TarrynTino

Empowerment Through Music: Inspiring the Next Generation

What sets Mixed Methods apart is its commitment to not only showcasing female talent but also to providing a platform for empowerment. I think it’s more than just a conversation; it’s a masterclass in navigating the electronic music industry as a woman, and showing the next generation of female DJs that they can—and should—dream big. The podcast is a reminder that while the road may be challenging, it is not impossible. By sharing their stories, they break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and pave the way for a more inclusive and diverse scene. These women are redefining what it means to be successful.

Success, as they pointed out, is not about fitting into a mold but about breaking it. It’s about staying true to oneself, embracing one’s uniqueness, and using it as a strength rather than a weakness. For the women of Mixed Methods, success is not measured by how others perceive them but by their own sense of accomplishment and satisfaction in their work.

A Call to Action: Building an Inclusive Future

As Mixed Methods continues to grow, so too does its impact. The podcast calls for change in the electronic music industry. Michaela and Tanya are not just content with giving women a voice—they want to see those voices lead to action. They are challenging the industry to do better, to create spaces where women can thrive, to provide equal opportunities, and to recognise the value that diversity brings to the table.

In the coming months, listeners can expect the podcast to continue pushing the envelope, bringing in more voices, more stories, and more discussions that challenge the status quo. This is just the beginning of what promises to be a groundbreaking journey—not just for the podcast, but for the entire scene.

So, here’s to the women who refuse to be silenced, who refuse to be sidelined, and who refuse to stop until they’ve made their mark. Here’s to the women of Mixed Methods and beyond— who are breaking the wheel and setting the stage for a new era not just within the scene, but within the world. Take up space ladies! It’s your right!
