When Punk Meets the Cosmos: Mercury’s in the Microwave are in a Sonic Universe of Their Own Making
Somewhere in the heart of Berlin exists a band that feels like it might be from another planet— Mercury’s in the Microwave. Saturns Returning Records CEOs Helena Goddard and Alexander Alien’s connection is deeper than blood. It’s cosmic. Two intergalactic forces, orbiting around their own brand of music; blending soft punk and post-punk with a dash of something otherworldly and humorous. It feels 90’s, it feels VHS, but more than that, it feels beguiling without it being demanding. A listen that leaves you wondering where you can hear more and if wearing trenchcoats are a thing again.
Like a comet appearing in the night sky, the pair dropped their debut single ‘Orchid Baby’, a tantalizing number that effortlessly slides into your kitchen and absolutely cooks. And when I say effortlessly, I mean it. Its deconstructed nature makes it even more impactful and highlights the soft interplay of vocals and dreamy production. The track makes you want to turn it up while getting a bit wine drunk and air-bass guitar your way through your house like Paul Rudd in I Love You Man or light a fire in your ex’s post box, you don’t know and it’s exhilarating.
Their songwriting process is a little quirky—kind of like the band itself. One moment you’ll find them sitting at a wine bar in their neighborhood, mulling over what’s bothering them, what’s working, what’s not, and turning those raw thoughts into music. The next, they’re working out and eating large amounts of protein in pursuit of winning Mr Olympia (to show those folk what real cosmic power is) and then writing and recording music. Both methods seem to work.
‘Orchid Baby’ is the product of such. Imagine the vibe of Spirit Blue and Beach House jamming out on a dusty tape from the ’90s, all filtered through the haze of an old basement. That’s “Orchid Baby” in a nutshell—chilled yet intense, with an energy that sticks with you long after the last note fades. Also, shoutouts for the Pokemon reference. Because, duh. We are excited for more. Way more. Watch the video and follow on Spotify.
