Psych-O-Positive’s “Mothra” Is A Monstrous Homage To The Godzilla Soundtrack.
The latest track from Veteran American Psych Rockers Psych-O-Positive is a multilayered, atmospheric interpretation of the Yuji Koseki composed Mothra’s Song from the soundtrack of the original Godzilla film. The cover captures the cinematic sound of the original while adding a fuller Rock sound. The instrumentation is tight with great chemistry between the band with intricate lead guitar, swooning bass guitar, and driving drums working in harmony. Judy Ann Nock and Debby Schwartz’s vocals delicately soar over the instrumentation and are layered to perfection.
Mothra was recorded at OK Records recording studio in Nyack with famed audio engineer Greg Talenfeld (Pavement, John Spencer Blues Explosion) and mastered at Super Giraffe Sound in Brooklyn by Ivan Julian (Richard Hell & the Voidoids, The Clash).
Asked to describe their music, Psych-O-Positive states, “If you took all the great punk bands of the 80’s and threw them in a blender with the best Riot Grrrl and Anti folk bands of the 90’s and you let that blender spin for the aughts to late teens and then at the dawn of 2020, you took the blender and threw it full force into a brick wall, the sound of the glass shattering and the slow spill down the wall would sound just like Psych-O-Positive.”
I found this track to be a really refreshing interpretation by Psych-O-Positive of a classic song in film history. It was true to the melodies of the original while adding a fresh twist, which feels like a respectful homage to Yuki Koseki. Go listen to Mothra on Spotify if it sounds like something up your alley.
