Miguel Meets Tame Impala In This Experimental Rock Track
Now, if you’re like me, I’m sure your mind exploded when you first heard Kevin Parker’s remix of Miguel’s track, titled “waves”. I was in grade 9, bumping tunes through my Samsung wired earphones that didn’t work in the left ear in Business Studies, when I felt the Alternative R&B and Indie Pop planets collide, expanding my view on the boundaries that music can shift and break. Back to earlier this week, immediately when I heard RHNO’s “Gowithyou”, I was reminded of that moment.
The track opens up with a heavily distorted bassline that contrasts fairy-like synth pads, which, with the addition of crunchy drum patterns, provides a dynamic soundscape that is easy to listen to. Every section of the track truly feels unique, with different usages of each element that create a steady progression in the song. The vocalist’s performance adds an extra layer of life to the experience – with extremely catchy vocal delivery and vibrant lyricism, this earworm has made a 20-room mansion in my brain.
Arjun Viswanathan (Brooklyn-based musician, producer, and engineer) and Kostas Papadopoulos (musician and producer) make up the Experimental Rock project, RHNO. While they have been working together for over 10 years, their recent work blends Indie Rock, Psych Rock, Ambient Music, Alt Pop, and adventurous synth work to craft genre-blurring sounds.
Drawing inspiration from film scoring – often with a projector running in their Brooklyn studio – RHNO explores chaotic yet refreshing sonic territory, as showcased in their newest track, “Gowithyou.” Additional contributions from Harlem-based jazz pianist Miles Wilkins – who brings imaginative synth stylings to “Gowithyou” – further expand the project’s dynamic, forward-thinking approach.
