I love making boards and experimenting with
new shapes and designs for my friends.
Back in the 1900s, the only Destoyers on the water were hulking weapons of war, vessels of might and power. Nowadays the Destoyers in the water are sleek, beautifully crafted boards, eating up the surf.
We sat down with 24-year-old, Kommetjie based Josh Fairley (@joshfairleyy) owner and operator of Destroyer Surfboards (@destroyersurfboards) to discuss his thoughts on shaping.
Completely self-taught he has been shaping for the last 5 years and surfing for the better part of 15, turning a passion into a business.
“I’m inspired by the people around me, some being friends that shape as well, others being people in the same industry as me. I love making boards and experimenting with new shapes and designs for my friends and customers. Another source of inspiration comes from the lifestyle of being a shaper. It’s very freeing and allows me a lot of time to do what I love.”
As cliche as it sounds, my purpose is to make people happy. I never want to stop pursuing and perfecting my craft. I want to keep innovating and progressing and creating the best possible boards for people.”
