Guess who’s back, back again… First Thursday Down South is back, tell a friend. It has been a much-needed rest, but we’re excited to be alive again!

After three months of rest, FTDS is seeing the sun once more. We’re already halfway through 2024 and summer is on its way. With that, the South is waking up again. There have been some incredible events held from Kalk Bay to Muizenberg but now the time to bring it all together again has arrived. September brings some incredible new artists to the South as well as some familiar faces who we just love. So come the 5th of September we come together once more. We can’t wait to see you all again Down South!

Art Gallery

INK BOX ART is an artist-centric exhibition space, a gorgeous little gem with fresh, ground-breaking and thought-provoking art that pushes the boundaries of creativity. Kalk Bay has earned the prestigious accolade of being named the world's "coolest neighbourhood" by Forbes alongside 11 other remarkable areas around the world.

INK BOX ART is by far one of the coolest ART spaces in False Bay. Come see for yourself. Look out for the purple pillar on Main Road in Kalk Bay, saunter up Memory Lane and find an artistic haven where imagination knows no bounds and come witness the power of ART.

For more than 20 years, the Artvark Gallery has been contributing towards the development, investment, and management of creative and artistic resources for the benefit of the whole community and its visitors. The uniqueness of the gallery, which is undoubtedly one of it's most distinctive features, offers visitors a unique and uplifting experience.

The Artvark Gallery is classic, contemporary, and strongly eclectic, with an affinity for folk art, while specializing in paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics, textiles, jewellery, and craft, as well as its unique custom-made steelworks. Having been in operation for over 23 years, Artvark has been a long-time favourite of Cape Town's art lovers and tourists visiting Kalk Bay.

Kalk Bay Modern

The Kalk Bay Modern is a contemporary art gallery and craft shop is focused on showcasing an eclectic selection of emerging young talents on the South African art scene, as well as established and well-known names, quality crafts from developing community groups and local designer products.
The gallery also holds one of the largest collections of contemporary San art from South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.

Situated above the famous Olympia Bakery with arguably the best view of Kalk Bay Harbour and False Bay, Kalk Bay Modern offers a unique selection of fine art prints, oil paintings, photography, ceramics and its own range of Art-I-San textiles (previously known as Ekoka textiles).

Bob's Bagels

Nestled snugly by the picturesque Kalk Bay Park, Bob's Bagel Cafe has long been an emblem of warm hospitality and unbeatable coffee, dishing out authentic bagels that have become the stuff of local legend. Gallery South is a unique boutique museum and gallery representing politically and spiritually rich work by South African art masters largely ignored during the apartheid years, alongside curated contemporary exhibitions of internationally prominent and emerging artists from Johannesburg, Venda, Southern Africa and the continent more widely. Ideally located two minutes walk from Muizenberg’s Blue Flag beach and surfers’ mecca, Gallery South’s current artist in residence is the prodigiously talented Theko Boshomane. Theko is a poetically inspired artist from Polokwane, who explores the pain of childhood experiences through his artworks, engaging in a self-healing process that offers hope to those who connect with his pieces, while also participating in prestigious exhibitions and competitions.

THE STORY

Awakening Culture and Art, Down South.

First Thursday has become such a prevalent night in Cape Town since its conception almost a decade ago. But what about the South? Where the water is warm and the views are sublime, the galleries and bars look out into the False Bay to see dolphins playing in the waves. We have so many amazing spaces right here on our doorstep, so why not bring the people to us?

Coordinated by The Cape Creative Collective, the focus is to activate what spaces we have here in both Muizenberg and Kalk Bay, from The BlueBird Market, all the way to Brass Bell, and everything in between. Join us every month for something exciting!
